The legend of Hanging Tree (also called The
Hanging Tree) states that in colonial times people accused of
witchcraft were hung from this tree. LIPI has not been able to find any
historical record to confirm this legend. However, in more modern times at
least 2 young people have died by hanging from the tree (whether by murder, suicide or
accident it is not clear). An additional theory that has recently been put
forth is that activity here is not paranormal in the traditional ghost
sense. Rather, the area is inhabited/protected by what Native Americans
called "Spirits Of The Forest"
that are simply trying to scare people to leave the area. If this is so, why
this particular area of land is of interest to the spirits isn't clear.
Observed Activity: Numerous
EVPs have been recorded here. Also
several unexplained lights and shadows have been seen in this area. During
at least one investigation a "lady in white" was spotted when no one else
(non-LIPI members) was around.
Empaths often get a strong feeling of
foreboding. Physical contact has been reported here as equipment has been
knocked out of investigator's hands while being used.
