Charles Mallory born in 1796 and died in 1882 was one of the most predominant ship builders in Connecticut in the new world and he and his legacy was continued throughout his lineage. His offspring are still staples in the shipping and nautical industries. Initially he was a sail maker, but quickly diversified his business by adding whaling and shipping broadening his foothold in Mystic Seaport. He and his sons were skilled in captaining as well as repairing ships and even made several ships for the Union during the Civil War. He was a founder of the 1st Bank of Mystic as well as a Senator.

The loft where he started his business was relocated up the river in 1951 and can now be found at the Mystic Seaport Museum located at 75 Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic Connecticut. The Mystic Seaport also has the Mallory Family collection including tools and blueprints, letters, statistics on vessels they owned and built, logbooks from many of his companies and other business and family artifacts. If you are really interested in immersing yourself in the family’s history, you can stay at their 7-bedroom home at 35 Willow Street in Mystic for about $1,000/night.
