Dewey Hall

A Brief History: Located in historic Sheffield, Massachusetts, Dewey Memorial Hall was opened in 1887. It was named for Orville Dewey, who was born in Sheffield in 1794. He was born and raised there and became an ordained Unitarian minister, preaching in New Bedford, Boston, and New York. He retired to his farm in Sheffield and after he died in 1882 his family built the hall in his honor. The goal of the hall was to entertain and support the community. Over the years, it has been used for weddings, concerts, lectures, art shows, community events, and other private parties. It still stands as a beacon of the community and a memorial to the legacy of Orville Dewey.

Haunted History: A location like Dewey Hall and a town like Sheffield are likely to not just have a rich history, but a haunted one as well. Strange noises have been reported and sightings of the ghosts of a woman and a young boy have also been reported. And who knows? Orville came back to Sheffield several times in life, so who’s to say his spirit hasn’t returned again today?
