Shippen Manor

A Brief History: Shippen Manor is located at 8 Belvidere Avenue Oxford Township in Warren County, New Jersey. The manor was built in 1754 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 1984. The house was built by William Shippen and his brother Joseph Shippen II who owned the nearby Oxford Furnace. The site of the house emphasizes the position of the Shippens during that time as a powerful and affluent Philadelphia Quaker family that played an integral role in both colonial and industrial history of colonial America. The estate was over four thousand acres, including land along the Delaware River and a grant to operate a ferry from the King of England. The Shippens would provide the furnace workers with food and shelter during the 9 months of operation during the year. The estate changed hands a few times before ultimately becoming property of the State of New Jersey, who transferred ownership to the County of Warren.
Today the Shippen Manor is a curated museum and houses the Warren Country Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs offices.
Haunted History: Guests of the Shippen Manor have reported seeing the spirits of a soldier, a little boy in a period dress and a woman's torso that seems to “whoosh” around the building. Employees have noted items appearing on the cupboard shelves and doors opening and closing on their own. Ghost Hunters visited this location in 2010 and experienced similar events to what has been reported.
