Bube's Brewery

A Brief History: Bube’s Brewery is located at 102 North Market Street in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. A German immigrant that was a brewing apprentice named Alois Bube bought the brewery in 1876. By the turn of the century, Bube had expanded the brewery and even built a Victoria hotel that featured the town’s first flushing toilet to accommodate overnight guests and offered dining in the catacombs to travelers that were passing through Mount Joy. In 1908 Bube died suddenly at the age of 57. The brewery closed just prior to Prohibition in the 1920s but by that time the family had become so wealthy that Bube’s descendants were able to keep the building, which remained untouched until they remolded and reopened it in 1968. Bube’s brewery still stands today in almost completely intact condition. The brewery began producing beer again in November 2001 for the first time since 1917. Today Bube’s brewery is not only a microbrewery, but also a dining hotspot.

Haunted History: Bube’s Brewery conducts ghost tours on a regular basis. Several people have seen the ghost of a middle-aged man standing at the bottom of the central staircase of the old hotel. Audible and visible apparitions of children have also been reported in one of the buildings corridors. Glowing figures have been seen gliding across the floor of the Catacombs and disembodied laughter has been heard echoing from the center of the chamber. Other reports include a phantom couple that has been seen sitting at one of the tables and then vanishing.
