Gettysburg Battlefield - Rose Woods

A Brief History: Rose Woods is located on the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania, off of Brooke Avenue. After the 1st day of fighting during the civil war as Union troops were being pushed back, this location became known as the “First Line of Union Defense” on the 2nd day of the battle of Gettysburg. This was a major site during Confederate General Longstreet’s attack. Confederate troops saw a weak point in the union defense at the Peach Orchard and as confederate troops began to push forward, they met heavy union resistance at the edge of Rose Woods. Confederate troops were forced to regroup and attacked the woods once more. After heavy fighting Confederate troops managed to push into Rose Woods and had hoped that it would be what they needed to completely shatter the Union lines. However, due to the Union's “Fish-Hook” formation from Little Round Top to Cemetery Hill, The Union Troops surrounded confederate troops at Rose Woods by the 3rd day of the battle of Gettysburg and started to massacre Confederate Troops who did not have time to retreat back. This Location is also the site of arguably the most famous photos of the Battle of Gettysburg taken by Timothy O’Sullivan. These photos include the Line of the Dead, Split Rock, Bent Knee, and Dead Soldier Eaten by Hogs. It is thought that about 25% of all photos during the Battle of Gettysburg were taken here and at Devil’s Den. This area has some of the least Monuments on the battlefield. The least visited Monument on the battlefield is located in the middle of Rose Woods, 64th New York Division Captain Henry Fuller.
Haunted History: People have claimed to see shadow figures walking through the woods as well as the sound of cannon fire when no cannons should be going off. One of the more common EVPs is that of a Male by the name of Omar. There are also claims of people being poked and grabbed.
