A Brief History: Located at 54 Main Street in Stowe Vermont, the Shaw’s General Store was opened in 1895, by Howard E. Shaw and C.A. Simmons. The building in which the store resides, was originally a part of the Mt. Mansfield Hotel, which burned down in 1889. The remnants were dismantled and moved to its current location on Main Street. The building was originally divided into separate stores. Simmons sold soft goods and clothing, while Shaw sold hardware, groceries, farming equipment and other assorted goods. After several years, Shaw bought out Simmons and took control of the store.

Shaw’s family lived upstairs, and his son Gale was born in the building in 1896. The store has remained in the Shaw Family for five generations. After Howard Shaw died in 1924, his son Gale took over the business and converted the basement into the first ski shop in Stowe. After Gale died in 1964, his daughter Ann Savela took over and changed the focus to snow sporting equipment. The store has undergone many changes in the products it offers, but the Shaw Family has never changed. They will be celebrating their 125thyear in business in 2020.

Haunted History: There have been claims of the lights turning on and off when no one is in the building. People have also seen a lady in white through the 2ndfloor window and then just disappear.
