Chateau-sur-Mer

A Brief History: It is common knowledge that Newport Rhode Island is known for its beautiful mansions, and Chateau-sur-Mer is one of many extraordinary locations here. Located at 474 Bellevue Avenue, Chateau-sur-Mer was one of the grandest houses in the area from the year it was built, 1852, until the Vanderbilt houses were built in the 1890’s. Built for William Shepard Wetmore, It was a place of lavish parties and memorable entertainment. Upon Williams’s death, his son George Peobody Wetmore inherited the house, whom renovated it to give it more of a French style of architecture. In 1969 the house as purchased by the Preservation Society, and in 2006 was deemed a National Historic Landmark.
Haunted History: Many tourists when visiting the house claim to have an eerie feeling and feel like they are being watched. When walking through the halls people claim to feel a sudden cold chill, and then the chill just goes away.
