Ebenezer Seely House

A Brief History: Located at 29 West Main Street in Oyster Bay New York, The Ebeneezer Seely House aka the Seely-Wright House or “The Country Lady” was built for Dr. Seely in 1830. He was a well-known businessman, town supervisor and meeting moderator, doctor and school commissioner and inspector. It was said that Dr. Seely was well acquainted with the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, and would entertain him in this home. Dr. Seely’s daughter married into the Wright Family, one of the founding families of Oyster Bay. The home was passed through many generations until it was purchased by Charles Geary in 1925 with plans of building a theater on the land. Locals were very unhappy with this decision but managed to save many architectural features, such as doors, by removing them. The theater was never built but was renovated around 1969 by Carol and W. James Olesner. The building is now a landmark and is currently used as a home and is also a spot on Oyster Bay’s historical walking tour.

Haunted History: There have been reports of feeling cold spots throughout the house even on the hottest summer days. There have also been reports of people passing by the house seeing a woman in 19th century clothing roaming around on the front porch of the house and then disappear.
