Kings Park Psychiatric Center Potters Field

A Brief History: Located behind William T. Rogers Middle School, 97 Old Dock Road Kings Park, New York, the Kings Park Potter’s Field, is the final resting place for thousands of former patient’s at Kings Park Psychiatric Center. The facility opened in 1885 and closed in 1996 and ran under the names Kings County Asylum, and Kings Park State Hospital before adopting its final namesake. At its height, the facility housed over 10,000 patients on its grounds.  This is 1 of 3 Potter’s Field, one of which sits behind William T. Rogers Middle School in Kings Park, NY, is where the patients from the institution were buried. Hundreds of bodies were unclaimed, and now reside in unmarked graves. Some were given a proper nameplate, but most of the graves are marked by numbers, which you can use to search a database to find out whose grave it is. Today, the cemetery is a field where you can go to remember the forgotten, and count the numbers on the stones, which are all that is left of those that called the abandoned fortress, home.
